Expectations When Observing The Lord’s Supper

1 Corinthians 11:24-26

If we aren’t careful in the church, we can get caught up in traditions and religious rights. We have two ordinances that Jesus left us to do:  to baptize and to institute the Lord’s Supper.  Why do we do it?  Because Jesus said do it.  We are to do it until Jesus returns.

The act of observing the Lord’s Supper dictates our demonstrations more so than our declarations.  The Lord’s Supper is more about what we do verses what we say.  The Lord desires to see our words and quotes in action (Matthew 15:8).  The Lord rejoices when He can see His words come to life. “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words.” (St. Francis of Assisi)

Read James 1:22

  1. Obedience

  • Obey Christ.

  • His body was broken.  This do in remembrance of me. Remember we drink His blood.

  1. Remembrance

  • Remember Christ and His sacrifice and suffering He went through for us.

  1. Thanksgiving

  • Just as Jesus gave thanks and participated in the Lord’s Supper, we also should give thanks.

  1. Proclamation

  • Proclaim Christ’s death until He returns (v.26)

  • When we learn to observe the Lord’s supper, we are presenting the Gospel in a visual way.

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
