History of the March of Roses

In the late 1950s, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church faced a financial challenge as they needed funds for essential structural repairs. To address this pressing need, the Senior Choir members were tasked with creating a fundraising initiative to gather the necessary resources for the renovation project.

Sister Estelle Aldridge, a devoted choir member, shared a vivid dream she had experienced. In her dream, she envisioned a stunning rose garden where elegantly dressed ladies strolled through, marveling at its beauty. Inspired by this dream, Sister Aldridge proposed that the choir organize a musical event. In this event, the ladies would adorn themselves in formal attire, each carrying a rose as they made their way down the aisle in a procession towards the choir stand.

Initially, the call to dress up extended to all church members, both male and female. With approval granted, the first "March of Roses Program" was launched in March 1959, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition.

The inaugural program was met with resounding success and swiftly became an annual affair at Pilgrim Rest, scheduled to take place on the fourth Sunday of every March. In the initial years, all five choirs within the church actively participated in the event. Although the March of Roses eventually evolved beyond its fundraising origins, a dedicated time is still allocated during the March service each year to honor and remember the individuals instrumental in establishing this enduring program within the church's history.

During this special time of tribute, church members continue to dress in their finest attire, sing songs of praise, and express gratitude to God for His provision and guidance throughout the years.
