I Am He - John 18:1-6

Jesus went from the Garden of Gethsemane to the heavenly garden.  He came from one garden and will return back to the garden.

In this text, “He” is not a part of the original language.  It was added.  Jesus says, “I am.”  In this idea of “I am He.”

1.     The Triumphal Entry

  • Jesus entered the Garden of Gethsemane on a donkey.

2.     The Olivet Discourse

  • Jesus was responding to the end time.  He was explaining to them what was yet to come.

  • John 17 is where the Lord’s original prayer is.

3.     The Week of Passion

  • Every believer needs to read about Passion Week, if you really want to celebrate Jesus.

  • During the Last Supper (Lord’s Supper) had ended and Jesus lead his disciples out into the Garden of Gethsemane.  At the conclusion of the meal, Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper.

  • After that, in John 18:1, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane (Garden of the Oil Press).  He took Peter, James and John because they were His prayer warriors and watching out for Him. Instead of them watching out, they went to sleep, three times.  Jesus prayed through His nervousness.  God sent an angel to help strengthen Him.  Jesus knew His Father’s will had to be done.

  • Jesus crossed the stream with His disciples to the Mount of Olives.  A crowd came looking for Jesus to arrest Him so they could crucify Him (along with Judas).

  • Judas identified Jesus with a kiss of death and betrayal.  They came to arrest Jesus and an altercation broke out.  Peter cut off a man’s ear and Jesus put it back on.  Jesus reigns on the just and unjust!

  • John 18:5 He says, “I am He” and it calls the crowds’ knees to buckle and knocked them all down. He allowed them to rise and they arrested Him.

  • Philippians 2:10:  “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;”

John 18:1-6

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
