Three Crosses at Calvary: The Man in the Middle!

John 19:13-18

All of us who ware familiar with the crucifixion can all relate without any hesitation of that scene on Skull Hill (Calvary).  There were three crosses at Calvary.  The record would show that those three crosses were designated for three criminals.  Barabas, was supposed to be the third person on the cross, but because the people wanted to crucify Jesus.  Pilate did everything he could to find no fault in Jesus.  Yet the questioned him and even threatened him if he didn’t crucify Jesus.  He tried to make a deal, to let go at least one on the behalf of someone else, but they wanted Jesus crucified and give them Barabas.

They lead Jesus to Calvary.  While on the way, the spat, whipped and talked about Jesus, to humiliate Him.  Jesus allowed them to crucify Him.

  1. Was among mankind.

  • Jesus lived as one of us.  He never distanced Himself from common people.  He could fit in wherever He went.  He didn’t have perspective of a person.  Jesus didn’t have a problem with any class of people.

  1. Was among sinful men.

  • He was among men who where known enemies.  He was around people that would do Him harm.  They purposely placed him on display, so the could humiliate Him.

  1. Was between disbelieving and believing.

  • On Calvary, Jesus was between one that became a believer, and the other that disbelieved.

  1. Was between the saved and the lost.

  2. Was between God and man.

  • Jesus took upon Himself all the punishment of our sins.

John 19:13-18

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
